I never intended to build my own website?

I've been in business for myself since 1998. As a freelance translator I spend a lot of time on the computer. So naturally, you'd think after spending the day working tirelessly until my eyes get squinty, the first thing I'd want to do is get away from it right? Wrong! OK, initially that was true but in 2007 I found a way to do something that changed the way I think, live and do business.

A little background first and then we'll get to

I grew up as a TCK (Third Culture Kid or Global Nomad) in several countries, including Bolivia, and I've had a burning passion to change the way the world sees Latin America ever since I was in grade school. I've always wanted to find a way to explain, describe, tell about "my other countries" and my experiences growing up overseas in the hopes that other people would understand me and other TCKs better. So as a hobby (notice I said HOBBY) I decided to create a blog about Bolivia. One that projects Bolivia in a positive light - in English!

I was fearful about the Internet, because I had no idea what a blog was exactly! I just knew I had to do something about this intense urge to inform as many people as I can with real, first-hand, live information about Bolivia in English. In my case my passion is Bolivia. Maybe you make gift baskets and that's yours! The point is... I have absolutely no computer programming skills but then quite by accident I found something that changed my life. A way to make my own website without the need to know any computer programming or design!

As I was perusing (ha! I love that word) I found a website I initially thought was a blog. It was very nicely organized and designed, tight and clean and to the point. At the bottom of the page it said POWERED BY SITE BUILD IT so I figured, this is the blog-making-thingy I'm going to use!

That one click changed my world.
It was out of the fog and into the sunlight!

Wow! How I didn't "get it" just from the name Site-Build-It is beyond me, but that's just how net-ignorant I am. (Was!) Suddenly I was reading all about how to build my own website (yes website not blog) and I was captivated by the fact that it's a completely possible thing to actually do something you love (like to make gift baskets) and make a living at it that I spent the next couple of hours reading page after page and realizing that I was actually going to be capable of creating a full website without any knowledge of HOW to do it! Suddenly turning my HOBBY into a way to make a living began to look very very interesting!

OK, so what does any of this have to do
with how to make gift baskets?

I'm getting there, I'm getting there! What began as a hobby (telling people about Bolivia) is now a full website with hundreds of pages and I earn a living doing what I love. In fact I've grown to love building my website so much that I purchased two more! After all, I do have other hobbies, one of which is to ... drum roll please ... yes! make gift baskets!
